There’s MAGIC in this Classroom
Current brain research has shown that connecting to background knowledge, demonstrating relevance, using novelty, and movement are all critical pieces in creating a strong, effective learning environment. When these elements are included in instruction, motivation and memory for all students increases. Using her extensive experience working with students with learning differences, Dr. Lyding uses research to create practical, relevant strategies for classroom use. The professional development is based on the acronym MAGIC which stands for Movement, Attitude, Gestures, Intrigue, and Connections.
Is it worth the time?
Interested in getting the most bang for your teaching buck? Learn about the powerful strategies that have been proven with millions of students to make a significant difference in student learning. More importantly, learn which strategies do not make a significant difference. Then, experience those strategies yourself so that you can analyze their impact. Use your time wisely.
There is so much information out there about brain research. How can you navigate what is relevant and valuable? These sessions use research–informed active learning strategies to enable the participants to articulate the meaning of terms used in brain research, differentiate the myths from truth, create mystery, and increase working memory. Then, considering how the brain makes meaning, the participants will explore and practice techniques they can bring back to the classroom.
Movement and reading? The combination does not seem to make sense, but the link is powerful! In this session, participants participate in the strategies that they can use in their classrooms. Dr. Lyding uses concrete, easy to use strategies to teach phonics, syllable types, vocabulary, and comprehension.
The link between physical movement, cognition, and learning is well established. While physical movement clearly has a positive impact on learning, many teachers wonder where to start. In this interactive and highly engaging session, Dr. Lyding will offer concrete and easy-to-use strategies that teach content, engage students in learning, and lead to better retention in the classroom.
Keeping students engaged does not end in K-12. It continues in college, but not all college instructors have been trained in methods to increase engagement and learning. This session provides practical, easy to use strategies that can help any instructor create more physical, emotional, and cognitive engagement in the classroom which in turn creates stronger retention.
